Robin-son, an electrical engineer in Singapore, for the description and pictures of the firstelectric light and power plant installed inMalay Peninsula. It serves the town ofMalacca which though small is now grow-ing rapidly on account of the rubber in-dustry. The site of the plant was originally acoconut plantation. One of the first pre-cautions taken was to secure a substantialfoundation and to do this it was neces-sary to use a good deal of piling on ac-count of the nature of the soil. The roofs of some of the buildings are ofconcrete and as a consequence their in-terior is quite cool even in the hottestweather. Metal filament lamps are usedto light the plant which is capable of fur-nishing 87 horsepower and while thisseems small by comparison with thelarger city plants of this country it isample at present for the needs of Malacca. The current is distributed over a threewire system of bare copper wire carri
