Wynton Marsalis, 2nd from right "Photo taken from the balcony, after the encore, just before the final bow. Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts, Illinois, January 19, 2008. A great show, an evening of all Duke Ellington. Started with a wonderful long gentle nuanced solo by Wynton that turned into Mood Indigo. Later he took another breathtaking solo on "In My Solitude". The first half ended with a romping fast version of Old Man Blues. The 2nd half featured a great version of Flaming Sword. The last regular song was Rockin' In Rhythm, then for an encore they did C-Jam Blues. We were in the center of the balcony where the sound was still perfect. Sorry about the fuzzy shots. Before the show they announced "no cameras, please". Also I had brought my cornet mouthpiece for Wynton to bless, but I was told no admittance anywhere back stage. At least I can say I tried to meet you, Wynton. Thanks for coming to Bloomington/Normal!" |
