Discussió:Tsolakert
@Leptictidium: thanks for your patience and explanation in my discussion page and don't worry I always keep my neutrality about this topic. I'm not arguing this region belongs to whom, but I think Sent Lari e Sola and this article is not the same. Because Sent Lari e Sola is located in the Occitanie Region of France and people who live in there speak Occitan language. Also I checked Occitan Wikipedia and they use Occitan name of the city like Catalan Wikipedia. OK, no problem. However, no Armenian people live in Iğdır and no one use Armenian language. Also, even Armenian Wikipedia use the article name as Iğdır instead of Tsolakert. I used google translate and read Armenian wikipedia page of Iğdır. It's written that Tsolakert was a Middle Age naming of that region. In Middle Age, Armenians dominated that region but after 12th century Turkish people started to settle there and they changed "Tsolakert" with "Iğdır". In 1828 Russian Empire captured that region and changed the name as "Surmalu". After establishment of Turkey, in 1923 this region named Iğdır again. I want to ask since when Middle Aged names used in Catalan wikipedia. Also, Armenian Wikipedia used Tsolakert before 2017 according to this discussion. In this disscussion Armenian Wikipedians said that even "Armenian people use Iğdır instead of Tsolakert, Iğdır is more popular than Tsolakert in Armenia so we can change the name". If we look at ethnicity, 55% Kurdish, 45% Turkish people. So, If you want to use Kurdish name of the city, which is so close to official name, it matches your guidelines as far as I understand and I certainly respect it. I don't want to change your policy because I know my place :) However, I want to a new assessment for this article and of course Província de Tsolakert. In addition, Turkish city Edirne called "Adrianopolis" in Roman and Byzantine Empire time. It's an ancient Greek naming. The same as city of Giresun was "Cerasus". I want to make it clear, if we don't If you agree with the name of Tsolakert, you have to change many names about geography of Turkey in terms of consistency. I don't know your poly but which one is important ethnic structure of city or ancient name of the city. Because In ancient Greek time, West, north and northwest parts of Turkey was under the domination of Greek culture, Roman Empire and Byzantine Empire before Turkish people migrated there. I just want to make it clear, if we don't do something, there will be any standardization about this topic. I'm not here for impose on nationalist ideas and if you think like that I'll never come here. I'm sorry if I disturbed you.--Sabri76 (disc.) 23:31, 21 nov 2021 (CET)
- Hi again, @Sabri76:. The reasoning here is that the ancient Greek names have not been in use for centuries and are, for most intents and purposes, "extinct". Tsolakert, on the other hand, was used [almost] within living memory. From what I have found, the events of the early 20th century had a very substantial impact on the ethnic make-up of Tsolakert/Iğdır, which until then had a very sizable Armenian population, perhaps even a majority. The fact that the disappearance of this Armenian population happened in the traumatic circumstances that it did makes the issue especially tricky. As for the Armenian article, I also checked it using Google Translate and, while the title is indeed "Iğdır", the body of the article uses "Tsolakert" almost exclusively. At any rate, I'll bring your argument to the old discussion we had on the issue and tag you there so you can contribute, in English if you want.—Leptictidium (digui) 08:30, 22 nov 2021 (CET)
