Context
[modifica]Our first contact with the Wiki World was in 2011. After a workshop in Museu Picasso where Àlex Hinojo was explaining his experience as a Wikipedian in Residence, we invited him to see our museum and explore our possibilities. We drafted a wikiproject to develop the wiki side of our museums, the Biblioteca Museu Víctor Balaguer and also to introduce 50 artworks usually on display on the main hall of our museum. With a selection of the best paintings and some sculptures, we thought we could give a general idea of what was our XIX century museum about. That was our first step.
We could notice at once how important it was to be present in Wikipedia: we started to receive new information about the artworks and we could see how many things were translated to other languages by users. It was like the pieces included in Wikimedia Commons just had made their appearance into the world.
Unfortunately everything remained like this for a long period, because we are a very small team, so we had no time to be working more hours to increase our Wikipedia project.
Until September 2013, when 3 different young students choosed our museum to do their practical work (without scholarship). They asked me what kind of work related to the Museum and its collections could be suitable for them. This was the chance. One came from a Museology Master Degree of Barcelona University. She wanted to put QR in the halls (but we had no Wifi, because we have no money to invest on technology improvements anywhere). The other one had already finished her studies in Humanities but had no proper job, so she wanted to be useful in her hometown museum. The third one is still studying Art History. For me it was clear: open more windows in Wikipedia. So I persuaded all three of them to concentrate all the energy in this project. Fortunately they beleived in the project. And they have really made a team.
Goals
[modifica]Main purpose: Collections on line
[modifica]Our web site is very simple. We can not afford a proper data base on it. Our economical situation is so terrible now that we have less team than 2011 (we have lost two members of technical staff), less budget, and no temporary exhibition program. So we can just work with a free environment as Wikipedia and with voluntary staff. So, we just can take advantage of all the work done during the last decades over the collections and the documents related. Now it is time to make it public and easy accessible.
How we did it
[modifica]We started all together (Museum staff, Amical Wikipedia and the students) writing down the first easy aims to achieve of the wikipedia project: upload to Wikimedia Commons all the pictures from the objects in the permanent exhbition area. Starting by art. Afterwards, we made a list of all the authors in the collection, they filled all the missing ones, and they linked all that was possible with the ones that had already an article. They are also observing the evolution of all our pieces, if they have been used to illustrate any other articles, if they have been captured by Wikipedia from other countries, and trying to fill all the gaps.
To do so, they come to our offices at least 4 times a week. They have a computer for everyone -although our Internet connection is not working as fast as they wish-. We have a weekley meeting - with directon and 2 curators- to interchange impressions, study pros and cons, and help them to keep on if they have any problem with contents. And once a month the Amical Wikipedia coordinator, Àlex Hinojo, comes to the Museum, so we can also solve technical problems, and follow the advise over Wikipedia performance.
Now we are going further on. We are choosing different plays to make every one write a Featured Article. That would mean for them a kind of more serious research in some of our artworks and their history.
3 Wikipedians are better than 1
[modifica]Marina Padilla, a student of 4th degree in Art, Montse Medina, a master student in Museology, and Elisenda Almirall, who have recently completed a Master in Comparative Studies of Art, Literature, and Philosophy, are three residents Wikipedians in the Víctor Balaguer Museum.
By different ways, we arrived in the Museum, where we could speak with the director, Mireia Rosich, who appointed us in this project. Even if we had no idea of how it would be developed, we soon realized that becoming part of that was very interesting. We've had the opportunity to work directly with the background information and the artworks displayed and we also have learned a lot from our practice in museum studies: for example, we've known the daily life of a cultural institution or we've been shown documentation that was only available to very few people.
We believe that there are different factors that have influenced our growing motivation for this project:
- First of all, being three wikipedans than only one. Often the task of wikipedian is autonomous and solitary but sharing information is interesting and enriching to realize that the opinion and knowledge of the others may be rewarding for an article. Moreover, working as a team allowed us to apply the philosophy of Wikipedia: Thanks to the collaboration of everybody we all can create a free encyclopedia, everyone can improve it and any kind of help is welcome. What's more, working together has facilitated the sharing of the tools we achieve and we use, so that has been useful to increase our view of each of the stages of the process.
- Another key to success is the opportunity of working beside technicians who have welcomed us with open arms. We have received from every one of the department all the support and help not only sharing their knowledge with us, which is very important, but also taking care of us on a personal level. We thank Mar and Ignasi for all the moments they've been teaching us the programs or answering the different questions we had as well as the cakes and sweets that they have brought us for breakfast. The atmosphere of comradeship they created is an essential part of the success.
- Finally, the support we've received from Amical Wikipedia and the wikipedian community is another factor we need to highlight. There are hundreds of questions that appear when you're rookie and while you're surfing the information sea, where everything is connected, where everything can be a window which connects you with lots of concepts.
