Sinònims

Terapon jarbua és una espècie de peix pertanyent a la família dels terapòntids.[2]

Descripció

  • Pot arribar a fer 36 cm de llargària màxima (normalment, en fa 25).
  • 11-12 espines i 9-11 radis tous a l'aleta dorsal i 3 espines i 7-10 radis tous a l'anal.
  • És de color crema a la part ventral. El cos, el cap i les aletes presenten una brillantor iridescent.[3][4][5]

Reproducció

Té lloc al mar i els joves migren a l'aigua dolça.[6]

Alimentació

És omnívor[7] i la seua dieta inclou peixos, insectes, algues i invertebrats.[8][3][9]

Depredadors

[modifica]

És depredat per Himantura uarnak i, a Sud-àfrica, per Ceryle rudis i Hydroprogne tschegrava.[10]

Hàbitat

És un peix marí, d'aigua dolça i salabrosa; demersal; catàdrom[11] i de clima tropical (26 °C-29 °C; 32°N-32°S) que viu entre 20 i 350 m de fondària.[12][3][13]

Distribució geogràfica

Es troba des del mar Roig[14] i l'Àfrica oriental[15][16][17][18] fins a Samoa,[19] el sud del Japó,[20] el mar d'Arafura[21] i Austràlia.[22][23][24][25][26][3][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52][53]

Observacions

És inofensiu per als humans i es comercialitza fresc, assecat o en salaó.[54][3]
